জসিমের জন্ম ১৯৫০ সালের ১৪ আগস্ট ঢাকার নবাবগঞ্জের (কেরানীগঞ্জ) বক্সনগর গ্রামে। ভালোবেসে বিয়ে করেছিলেন দেশীয় চলচ্চিত্রের সুঅভিনেত্রী সুচরিতাকে, অবশ্য তাদের সংসার বেশিদিন টেকেনি। আবারও তিনি বিয়ে করেন বাংলাদেশের প্রথম সিনেমা 'মুখ ও মুখোশ'র নায়িকা পূর্ণিমা সেনগুপ্তার মেয়ে নাসরিনকে। জসিম-নাসরিন দম্পতির তিন ছেলে—এ কে রাহুল, এ কে রাতুল এবং এ কে সামী। বাবার পথ ধরে অভিনয়ে নাম লেখাননি তাঁরা, কাজ করছেন সংগীতজগতে। তিনজনই যুক্ত ব্যান্ডের সঙ্গে।

Jashim was born on August 14, 1950 in Boxnagar village of Nawabganj (Keraniganj) of Dhaka. He married for love the actress Shuchorita, but their marriage did not last long. Again he married Nasrin, the daughter of Purnima Sengupta, the heroine of Bangladesh's first film 'Mukh O Mukhosh'. Jashim-Nasrin couple have three sons — AK Rahul, AK Ratul and AK Sami. They did not make their name in acting following their father's path, they are working in the music world. All three are associated with the band.
