Left-sided heart failure and right-sided heart failure are two types of heart failure that affect different sides of the heart.
Left-sided heart failure occurs when the left ventricle of the heart is unable to pump blood efficiently to the rest of the body. This can lead to a buildup of fluid in the lungs, causing symptoms such as:
Shortness of breath (orthopnea, paroxysmal nocturnal dyspnea)
Fatigue
Coughing up pink, frothy mucus
Wheezing or crackles in the lungs
Causes of left-sided heart failure include:
Coronary artery disease
High blood pressure
Cardiomyopathy
Valvular heart disease (mitral or aortic valve problems)
Right-sided heart failure occurs when the right ventricle is unable to pump blood effectively to the lungs. This can lead to a buildup of fluid in the body, particularly in the legs, ankles, and abdomen, causing symptoms such as:
Swelling (edema) in legs, ankles, and feet
Weight gain
Fatigue
Shortness of breath (exertional dyspnea)
Abdominal swelling (ascites)
Causes of right-sided heart failure include:
Left-sided heart failure (most common cause)
Pulmonary hypertension
Chronic lung disease (COPD, pulmonary embolism)
Right ventricular infarction
Key differences:
Left-sided heart failure primarily affects the lungs, while right-sided heart failure affects the body (peripheral edema).
Left-sided heart failure often presents with respiratory symptoms, while right-sided heart failure presents with signs of fluid overload (edema, ascites).
