STORYLINE
A pitched battle raged at a Hamas stronghold in Gaza City after a day of clashes that killed at least six people, burying a three-day truce between warring Hamas and Fatah militias.
Late on Thursday, hundreds of Fatah gunmen stormed a Hamas stronghold, the Islamic University in Gaza City.
At least two people were wounded in heavy exchanges of fire, and flames were seen leaping from two of the university buildings.
A security official affiliated with Fatah said seven Iranian citizens were arrested at the university, and an eighth committed suicide.
A Hamas official denied the claim and said there were no Iranian citizens at the university.
Iran has supplied Hamas with funds, but there have been no previous claims of Iranians working with Hamas in Gaza.
Battles were raging in several parts of Gaza City, including government compounds and security headquarters.
Hamas militants fired homemade rockets at the president's office complex.
At Jebaliya refugee camp near Gaza City, masked gunmen claiming to represent Hamas' military wing gave a news conference, during which a spokesman rejected US President George W. Bush's request for Congress to approve 85 million (m) US dollars in aid for Palestinian security forces loyal to moderate President Mahmoud Abbas, who heads the Fatah movement.
"Just yesterday the big devil Bush talked about his new American plan and we don't think any wise man can believe that this support comes in the interest of the Palestinian people," a man who gave his name as Abu Obeida said.
Thursday's fighting which continued into the early hours of Friday, came after Hamas gunmen ambushed an official convoy guarded by the Fatah presidential guard and hijacked two trucks filled with tents, medical kits and toilets, security officials said.
The United States and some Arab countries had pledged to give equipment and training to the security forces loyal
to Abbas.
The attack sparked the new fighting, which killed six people, five from Fatah and one from Hamas, hospital officials said.
More than 60 people were wounded during the day.
