It's one of the most common sharks in the world, but it doesn't seem to do much. I'm Jonathan Bird and this is Shark Academy!
The Whitetip Reef shark is a small shark, common on Pacific reefs, not usually getting much bigger than 5 feet long.
The common name “White tip” comes from very obvious white coloration on tips of dorsal fin and tail.
The Whitetip Reef Shark’s scientific name Triaenodon obesus means "Fat Trident-toothed" shark. A close-up look at the teeth will reveal where the "trident" reference comes from. The shark's teeth each actually have three points like Neptune’s trident.
The Whitetip Reef shark is one of those sharks that can rest on the bottom and gulp water to breathe. It does not need to keep swimming to breathe.
Typically the Whitetip Reef shark is much more active at night. On an island called Cocos in the Pacific, the Whitetip Reef sharks have learned to hunt by following divers’ lights. And so on a night dive I was able to watch a whole bunch of Whitetip Reef sharks devouring fish.
