Description - Fondly called as 'BM' by locals, Bukit Mertajam is located in the middle of Seberang Perai in mainland Penang. The town derived its name from a hill named Mertajam, meaning "pointed" in Malay. In the old days, the bustling town was known for its pepper, clove, cinnamon and sugar plantations. Unfortunately, despite its strategic significance to not only the state of Penang but also the entire Northern Malaya, the history of the town was never well studied. Today, the modern day Bukit Mertajam is without a doubt a sprawling urban centre, added with expanding boundaries which have far exceeded its dated cartographical confines.
