Arabella was the final collaboration of Richard Strauss and his great librettist Hugo von Hofmannsthal and features a score rich in lyrical melody. It follows an impoverished noble family in mid–19th-century Vienna trying to adapt to a changing world, and while certain elements of operatic farce are present, a distinct elegance pervades the work. The title heroine herself—honest, pure, well-meaning—is one of opera’s most appealing and believable characters.
