Описание: Today we feature how to climb by bike Emosson Dam, Switzerland - the star climb of the 2016 Tour de France. Emosson Dam is the classic must-do 'out and back' cycle routes in the French Alps from Chamonix Mont-Blanc France.

Emosson Dam premiered in the 2016 Tour de France with the stage starting in Berne, Switzerland and the stage finish at Emosson summit. Its first appearance in a road cycling Grand Tour was the 1970 Tour of Switzerland and didn't feature again in a major stage race until the 2016 Criterium Dauphine.

Today we climb Emosson Dam from Chamonix Mont-Blanc, France climbing over the Col des Montets 1461M and descend to the Swiss border. Shortly after the border, once the road ramps up there is a left turn which descends down to the start of the climb of Emosson Dam.


We recommend turning right after 2kms and go through the village of Finhaut. Its tougher climb and whilst the 2016 Tour de France avoided the village predominantly because the publicity caravan wouldn't fit through the narrow streets. The Village has amenities, a small super market, cafe toliets and a water fountain which is your last opportunity to fill up before you continue to climb Emosson Dam to reach the summit. The road cycling climb to Emosson is south facing and there is little shelter from the sun.

Emosson Dam was classified a HC climb in the 2016 Tour de France. The climb is 10.4km at average 8.4%, maximum 12.4% although going through Finhaut the road is much steeper, maybe around 14%. You will climb 900M to the summit at 1960M.

Emosson Dam now has the official Tour de France route markers and km boards and we don't think it will be long before it makes another appearance in the Tour de France.
