Papyrus set the standard with 1996's Nascar Racing, an ultra realistic PC simulator successfully ported to the PS1. When EA took over, Nascar '98 was released for the PlayStation, and it increased accessibility, adding extra content, and some visual improvements as well, but not without compromises.
Nascar '98 added more comprehensive licensed content with real drivers, tracks, and cars, as well as a variety of game modes and easier to use settings. But... the damage system has been simplified. Car models can suffer a limited amount of dents and damage, but this system is no longer as detailed as it was in 1996, and models no longer lose parts. Realism has clearly been sacrificed in favor of speed and accessibility, and the game also suffers from much less detailed collision physics. Hitting a rival car no longer causes it to lose control.
The first release in this new series of EA games was released for both Saturn and PlayStation, and the version presented here is the Saturn version. Unfortunately, this version was not the best. The game was clearly designed for PlayStation hardware, and due to the Saturn's complex architecture and poor development tools, what we got was a game with somewhat inferior visual quality that clearly did not take advantage of the system's advanced 3D hardware capabilities. It runs at 20 fps, has no transparency beyond the HUD speedometer, dynamic shadows in the cockpit view have been removed, and the rendering distance has been reduced. Some textures in some stages appear to be misaligned for some reason.
