After a period of police questioning, a second “person of interest” was released from custody on Wednesday night, meaning that the killer is still at large.

The FBI director, Kash Patel, wrote on X: “The subject in custody has been released after an interrogation by law enforcement. Our investigation continues and we will continue to release information in interest of transparency.”

This was the second person to be arrested and then released after Kirk, 31, was shot at a university rally in Utah on Wednesday afternoon. Kirk died in the hours afterwards. The university campus was put on lockdown for a number of hours as the local area was searched by police.

By Wednesday evening the university said that the campus was “all clear” with no threat, and would remain closed until Monday amid the continuing investigation.
