The German MP35 is one of the weirder submachine guns to come out of the WWII period—and that’s saying something. It’s blisteringly fast, firing at over 600 rounds per minute, but the design choices are straight out of the mad scientist playbook.
First off, the right-side magazine feed. Why? No tactical advantage—just an odd holdover from earlier Bergmann designs. Then there’s the rear-mounted, non-reciprocating charging handle—straight off a Mauser bolt-action rifle. You literally work it like you’re chambering a round on a K98. The idea? Familiarity for troops trained on bolt guns… but come on, did they think soldiers couldn’t figure out a side charger?
Mechanically, it’s a closed-bolt, blowback-operated SMG, incredibly well-built (too well, really—production was slow and expensive). Accuracy was decent, but in the mud and chaos of war, simplicity usually wins—and the MP35 was anything but simple.
Still, it’s a rare and fascinating piece, and when it runs, it rips. Fast, smooth, and just quirky enough to be unforgettable.
