Japan's Prime Minister Ryutaro Hashimoto on Tuesday (31/12) criticised the media for making direct contact with leftist rebels holding hostages at the Japanese ambassador's residence in Peru.
During his New Year's address to the country Hashimoto said he hoped the
incident which happened on the 12th of December would be resolved quickly and peacefully.

SOT Hashimoto (jap) " It is extremely regrettable that the unfortunate
incident (hostage drama) which occured on december the 12th still remains unsettled";
SOT Hashimoto " we will do our utmost to solve the crisis quickly and
peacefully";
SOT Hashimoto "However they are called guerrillas or terrorists or MRTA, we never were in direct contact with them and will never accept such an offer. It is the Peruvian Government which will handle the case with full responsibilty";
SOT "We will never bow to pressure from the guerrillas..we will never
compromise with the terrorists";
SOT Hashimoto "On the basis of the above-mentioned stance..we must strive to ensure the safety of the hostages and bring about an all-out settlement of the affair. Negotiations for the settlement have to be done through a single channel and it has to be avoided to negotiate with them through two or three channels";
