Enter the holiest day on Israel's calendar and behold the sovereign authority that calms chaos with a word. Today's reading unveils the Day of Atonement—the one day the High Priest could enter the Holy of Holies, bearing the blood of a bull and a goat to make atonement for himself and the people, while a scapegoat carried their sins into the wilderness. It then establishes the sanctity of blood and forbids uncovering nakedness, calling Israel to a holiness that reflects their God. In Mark, Jesus declares that nothing is hidden that will not be revealed, then demonstrates His identity by calming a raging storm with three words: "Peace! Be still!" The lesson is unmistakable: the same God who demanded blood for atonement and purity for His people is the One who speaks to wind and wave and is obeyed. The blood covered them; the Word commands creation.
