Into the REALM of SPICE: MANADO, SO MUCH SAMBAL!!! North Sulawesi, Indonesia

Описание: This is the 7th in the eight part Indonesian series and the first of two Manado!

No reason to wait for the heat. It was brought with this first staple Manado Breakfast, Tinutuan. It is a rice porridge usually cooked with something like sweet potato, pumpkin, and/or cassava. A great way to have a hearty breakfast. However, my favorite thing by far was the Nike Goreng. Greasy, fried fish that was nice and salty.

Next up, I went for Manado style Nasi Kuning. Arotmatic, light, fluffy, turmeric soaked rice topped with sweet soaked meat, potatoes, and then crunchy little potato bits! Add some kecap manis and sambal and you will have a sweet/heat combo that will blow you away!

I changed gears a little bit and took a break with some kopi susu and some Manado treats. The Panada wasn’t my favorite, but wow how I love pisang goreng with sambal roa!!! It really made me question everything as I have been a french fry and ketcup guy my whole life and to now to find something I like as much and maybe even more...wow.

Finally I went for a massive grilled fish dinner Manado style. That means open flame heat and then coated, covered, and smothered in chilis. In case that wasn’t enough chilis for you, they have three sambals, sauces, and just pure flavor sides waiting for you.

Lasty, I had to get something sweet so I headed over to try the Klapertaart, a Dutched influenced pastry that has had the locals fall in love with it!
