Port Royal was one of the richest cities of the 17th century—and it was completely based on pirate loot. The English state protected pirates, had them plunder Spanish ships, and took a percentage from this system. The city created the first example of modern money laundering mechanisms: illegal loot was integrated into the legal economy. In 1692, an earthquake destroyed the city, but the real cause of collapse was economic—pirate loot had been depleted.
