From the trenches of World War I to the modular weapons of the modern U.S. infantryman, this video traces the evolution of American grenade weapons — from early rifle-mounted launchers to the M320A1 40mm system.
The journey begins in 1918 with the VB rifle grenade launcher mounted on the M1903 Springfield, showing how soldiers first turned standard rifles into grenade-launching weapons during the final years of World War I.
By 1942, the M1 grenade launcher adapter continued that idea, allowing the M1903 Springfield to fire rifle grenades during the early years of World War II.
In 1943, the M7 rifle grenade launcher brought the concept to the M1 Garand, combining America’s iconic semi-automatic rifle with explosive infantry firepower.
By 1944, the M8 rifle grenade launcher appeared on the M1 Carbine, giving airborne and light infantry troops a more compact grenade-launching option.
In 1945, the M9A1 antitank rifle grenade showed how rifle grenades were adapted for heavier battlefield targets during the final phase of World War II.
Then came a major shift.
In 1961, the M79 40mm grenade launcher changed the role of the grenadier forever. Instead of launching grenades from a rifle, soldiers now carried a dedicated 40mm weapon built for explosive support fire.
By 1969, the M203 underbarrel launcher brought grenade firepower directly under the M16 rifle, giving infantrymen both rifle and grenade capability in one weapon system.
In 1990, the M203A1 continued that evolution on the M4 carbine, adapting the grenadier role for the Gulf War era and modern compact rifles.
By 2008, the M320 40mm grenade launcher introduced a more modular design, able to function both attached to a carbine or as a standalone launcher.
Finally, in 2017, the M320A1 paired with the M4A1 carbine represents the modern American grenadier: flexible, modular, and built for today’s infantry battlefield.
From rifle grenades…
to standalone 40mm launchers.
From the M1903 Springfield…
to the M320A1.
This is the evolution of U.S. grenade weapons.
