Before we began restoring the the 1865 farmhouse, we carried another old house for a time.
This 1830 high post cape had settled , aged, and endured decades of wear. What followed was a full structural restoration - lifting and leveling the house, rebuilding compromised framing, updating electrical and plumbing systems, restoring plaster, and bringing every room back into sound condition.
This episode reflects on what it took to bring that house back to life - and what it means to hand an old home forward to its next caretakers.
Old houses don't belong to us. We just carry them for a while.
