It does not hit the ship's hull directly, but rather detonates under the vessel's keel, creating a massive steam bubble that pierces the ship's stern and splits it in half. "This torpedo exploded under the stern of the Iranian ship and lifted it out of the water, after which it sank in a matter of minutes ," the source added. According to recent estimates, the cost of one Mark 48 ADCAP torpedo is approximately $4.2 million. Despite the high cost, experts believe the use of such weapons is justified in the event of the destruction of a large warship. Shugart emphasized that such submarine attacks are extremely rare in modern naval history. Besides World War II, he pointed to the 1982 Falklands War as one example of a submarine-launched torpedo sinking a major surface warship. "This was the second time in history that a nuclear submarine fired a torpedo and sank a ship. The only other such incident was the British submarine HMS Conqueror, which similarly sank the Argentine cruiser General Belgrano during the Falklands War in 1982 , " Shugart said. The expert believes that the operation sent a clear message to the Iranian government. "This strike sent a message that if Iran still has warships or vessels belonging to the Iranian government, they should expect no mercy ," he added. As previously reported, Pentagon Secretary Pete Hegseth announced the sinking of an Iranian warship by a US submarine off the coast of Sri Lanka. He noted that this was the first torpedo-driven sinking of a ship since World War II. Hegseth also reported the sinking of the Iranian "trophy ship" Soleimani, named after Iranian General Qasem Soleimani, who was killed by the US military during Donald Trump's first term. "I think the US president caught him twice ," the minister added, alluding to the previous operation against the general. Earlier, news broke of the sinking of an Iranian vessel off the coast of Sri Lanka. A Sri Lankan naval spokesman reported the recovery of the bodies of those aboard the vessel.
