The morning shift changes between our lovebirds yesterday were smooth as butter as Jackie and Shadow continued to care for their two eggs. During one exchange, Jackie delivered some fluff and both tugged at it with their beaks. Then after setting it aside, Jackie nudged Shadow up by using some sweet talk and her quiet chirping.

While Shadow was out and about, a high speed aerial pursuit with a 3rd adult bald eagle was about to go down. There is definitely no hesitation from Shadow when it came to defending his family and home. He has stepped up and reported for eagle duty in so many ways… this one in particular was in pursuit of another visiting intruder. Shadow briefly touched down on the Simba Tree, then their big chase unfolded in the sky above.

Jackie was also on high alert and was calling out in her loudest voice from the nest. She observed the chase as long as she could before deciding to fly off to assist Shadow in escorting that adult bald eagle intruder out. Jackie and Shadow are wonderful partners and always manage their eagle business like pros!

After the unwelcome visitor cleared out, only about five minutes had elapsed and Jackie raced back to the nest to the eggs. Later on, Shadow was confidently perched on the Cactus Snag, while Jackie made her way to the Lookout Snag for a quick look around. And just before roost time, a young eagle flew by toward the Roost Tree area.

What beautiful scenarios in nature to witness! These two continue to exhibit lessons of survival and resilience, of strength and hope. Jackie and Shadow continue to demonstrate their strong bond and the trust they have in one another.

“Pip Watch” begins March 31. This is when we look for the first small crack in the eggs that begins the hatching process. Stay tuned for more eagle adventures in the days ahead!
