Using hands for ripping tissues, tissue paper, paper, news paper, junk mail, tape- it is great for working on bilateral skills and strengthening fine motor. This is a great precursor or to help strengthen for scissors skills.
OT demonstrates activities we can do using ripped pieces, tape, wisk and a few common household items.
Play is a child's primary occupation, education is their work. Play supports learning. Play also helps with developing the underlying skills that make learning possible! We learn new skills faster if we are having fun, so whenever possible, let's make things FUN!!
This video and channel are a sort of virtual library of tasks, activities, games, DIY, projects, etc. from an Occupational Therapist, made for her students.
These videos are not meant to be a substitute for occupational therapy, however, they may be helpful for those looking for more information, and for parents at home who may be trying to implement home instruction, therapy sessions, and balancing so much more! This video and all in the asynchronous resources created for this library are in effort to provide easy to access distance learning opportunities from OT to continue to help with skill development. Students and families can access the library of videos and take advantage of benefits including: choose when you want to do it, work at your own pace and pause as needed, repeat activities or portions of videos as needed, parents get to be involved in set-up and cuing, and can gain better understanding of what their child does in OT and why. Families also have the flexibility to choose to do additional / extra activities or videos, or repeat activities as often as they would like for additional skill building work.
Always practice safety. Always ensure appropriate supervision of children. Do not participate or set your child up to participate in activities or videos that are contraindicated. Viewers participate in activities on their own volition and take responsibility as such- I am not there to facilitate engagement, though I wish I was! The hope is that these resources can help inspire and engage children, families, parents, and caregivers, to continue to provide enriching opportunities for development and occupational engagement.
