This frightening #figure is also known as #Kramperl or #Bartl in the Advent tradition. He is accompanied by Saint Nicholas. In addition to the Eastern Alps and southern #Bavaria, it also occurs in #Austria, #Liechtenstein, #Hungary, #Croatia, #Slovenia, #Slovakia, the Czech Republic. The good children receive presents from St. Nicholas, while the naughty ones are punished by #Krampus.
Krampus derives from pre-Christian times, like many other demonic figures in the Alps.
In Bavarian #dialects, #Nikolaus, Krampus, and their companions are called Pass or Bass.
