During the World War II housing crisis in Washington D.C., one apartment becomes home to an unlikely trio. Connie Milligan (Jean Arthur), trying to do her patriotic duty, reluctantly rents half her apartment to retired millionaire Benjamin Dingle (Charles Coburn), who then secretly sublets half of his half to handsome soldier Joe Carter (Joel McCrea). As the three navigate their cramped living situation, the mischievous Dingle sets out to play matchmaker between Connie and Joe, despite her engagement to a dull bureaucrat.
