How do you fix acoustics in a large, hard-surface arena before construction ever begins?
At Black Rock Event Center in Heber City, Utah, MD Acoustics was brought in to answer exactly that question.
Black Rock is a 3,000-capacity hockey arena and flexible event venue featuring a high-fidelity AV system — but like many large venues, it presents significant acoustical challenges. Hard surfaces, parallel walls, and large volumes allow sound energy to linger, resulting in excessive reverberation and poor speech intelligibility.
To understand the space, our Utah team conducted on-site baseline acoustic testing using controlled impulse noise events. Balloon pops were performed at eight locations throughout the arena, allowing us to capture detailed decay behavior and frequency response across the space. The data revealed dominant low-frequency energy below 1 kHz, contributing to a boomy, washed-out soundscape.
While measurements were being collected, our designers built a full 3D model of the venue in Treble, our acoustic simulation and auralization software. The model was carefully calibrated to match real-world measurements by assigning accurate acoustic properties to every surface.
With a validated baseline simulation in place, we evaluated multiple acoustic treatment strategies. Options B and C significantly reduced low-frequency buildup, improved speech intelligibility, and produced more controlled reverberation times.
The power of acoustic simulation and auralization is simple: it removes guesswork. Clients can hear the impact of design decisions before anything is built, enabling faster approvals, greater confidence, and smarter investments.
Thanks for watching.
