Argentina in the beginning of the 20th century was an agrarian country that experienced a huge wave of immigrants earlier, mostly from Europe. In 1884 Argentina political actor Juan Bautista Alberdi said that «to manage our country is firstly to populate it». This statement made a lot of sense then. Population was an important issue of Argentina's politics because the country was extremely empty after massacre of indigenous population. A big part of the immigrants were ethnic Germans who wanted to start a new life in South America.
Of course, Germans formed local communities in Argentina and sought to create a specific bond with German Empire. There was a stable circulation by the Atlantic ocean between Argentina and Germany. There existed a special German organization Etapendienst. Many entrepreneurs who settled in Patagonia actively supported German idea, and this fact heavily influenced further history of the country.
In 1916, the left-wing party of Radical Civic Union, led by Hipólito Yrigoyen, gained power in Argentina through the first elections with universal male suffrage, though they only secured 45% of the vote, facing a conservative majority in Parliament that hindered their legislative agenda. Yrigoyen maintained Argentina’s neutrality during the First World War, which allowed the country to export goods to Europe and issue credit, despite pressure from the United States and the sinking of two Argentine ships by Germany...
