The idea of the “digital natives” – children raised on a social media diet and being instinctively better at it than any adult – lies at the heart of the current public debate on risk and trust and families online. However, how true is this assumption? In this talk I lay out some of the findings from a small, but in-depth look at the social media practices of families with young children. I challenge some of the assumptions made about “digital natives” and explain what the implications are for all of us.
Katya is the Open Research Fellow at LORIC. She provides support to businesses on data gathering, data analysis and data quality. She is writing up her PhD, which shows the results of a four year look at the social media practices of families with young.
Katya specialises in using mixed methods of qualitative and quantitative analysis to provide her clients with relevant data-driven insights.
She also leads on LORIC’s open data initiatives. She is passionate about social return on investment, social value, and data analysis. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at https://www.ted.com/tedx
