''I AM NOT WHO YOU THINK I AM'', SHE CONFESSED. THE DUKE SMILED AND SAID HE ALREADY KNEW

Описание: Look, I need to get something off my chest about this Edmund Vale situation because it's been eating at me since I finished writing this story.

This Duke - this DUKE - sees Felicity at a ball in Bath wearing a dead woman's pearls and borrowed gloves with a wine stain on the thumb, and his first move is to corner her on the terrace and basically say "I know you're a fraud." But here's the thing that made my blood boil: he'd recognized her IMMEDIATELY. That crescent moon birthmark on her temple? He remembered it from three years ago when she was the governess who saved his niece Catherine from complete psychological shutdown after her parents died in that carriage crash.

So what does he do with this information? Does he offer help like a decent human being? NO. He leverages her desperation into a fake engagement to satisfy his father's will, makes her think it's all business, and watches her struggle with the guilt of "lying" to him WHEN HE KNEW THE WHOLE TIME. The manipulation of it all! 😤

But then there's moments that completely wrecked me. Like when seven-year-old Catherine collapsed with scarlet fever at the London townhouse and that quack physician wanted to bleed her. Felicity literally kicked him out and spent the entire night bathing the child with cool water and making willow bark tea with honey. Edmund was upstairs "pacing like a caged animal" because he was too terrified to face potentially losing someone else he loved. When Felicity finally dragged him downstairs, Catherine looked at her uncle and asked "Will I die?" and this broken man had to promise her he wouldn't let it happen.

The wildflower book moment destroyed me too. After Felicity told him she hated roses because "they die so quickly and the smell is too sweet, too much" - that she preferred wildflowers that grow in ditches because "they don't need anyone to care for them, they simply exist" - he left a leather-bound copy of "Wildflowers of the British Isles" on her pillow with a note in his precise handwriting: "So you may know their names." 💔

And can we discuss the sapphire brooch situation? Felicity had to leave Lady Margaret's last gift with Mrs. Cope (her Bath landlady) as partial payment for unpaid rent. This woman was so desperate she was planning to disappear on the mail coach to Newcastle in three days. Meanwhile Edmund's over here playing 4D chess with a fake engagement.

Lord Hartley showing up at Lady Ashcroft's ball in Grosvenor Square demanding five hundred pounds was chef's kiss perfect timing though. Because Edmund had already had Felicity FOLLOWED that morning to The Red Lion pub, learned about the blackmail threat, and immediately went to every single one of her father's creditors and settled the accounts. Not last week. Not as some grand romantic gesture. He did it THE SAME DAY because she was in danger.

When Hartley tried to expose her in front of the entire ton, Edmund stood there in his perfectly tailored midnight-blue coat and mutton chop sideburns and said: "She worked as a governess to support herself after her father's death. There is no shame in honest labour. And if any of you believe otherwise, you may leave now." The SILENCE that followed! And then Lady Pemberton started slow-clapping and told Hartley to get out. 👏

The garden symbolism got me too - Felicity spending weeks clearing the overgrown east garden at Coldstream Manor (Edmund's dead mother's garden), finding the fountain choked with dead leaves and rose bushes gone completely feral. One morning she discovered new shears on the bench. Better quality, leather-wrapped handles. No note. Just Edmund silently acknowledging what she was doing.

Fast forward six months to the epilogue: they're married, Catherine lives with them permanently in a yellow room in the east wing calling Felicity "Aunt," and the gardens are this wild beautiful chaos of roses tangled with lavender and wildflowers growing everywhere. Edmund actually SMILES now. When Felicity plays the piano - that folk tune her mother used to hum while kneading bread - he pulls her close in the same drawing room where his dead wife used to play badly every evening.

The man spent three years carrying guilt for a carriage accident that killed his wife (which happened because HE sent her to Edinburgh during a fight), built walls so high nobody could penetrate them, then Felicity showed up with calloused hands and a fake name and he chose her specifically BECAUSE she was real.
