Описание: Explore the inner workings of seed banks across the world and the impressive diversity of seed. From pine trees on icy mountain tops to corn grown on a Cherokee reservation, seed scientists are saving the world by saving seed. Haley Smith, horticulturist and seed scientist, explains how seed dormancy can lock seeds in time, and the many ways seed banks capitalize off seed dormancy to solve problems around the world. It all starts with a knowledge of the many complex ways of how seed work. Haley is the Seed Program Coordinator at Dorena Genetic Resource Center for the US Forest Service for the past six years. Her work includes growing many difficult and rare species, as well as researching seed storage protocols.

Prior to her work at Dorena, she researched soil ecology in surface coal mines, and several other research projects.

She is originally from Oklahoma. Her hobbies include gardening, darkroom photography, timbersports, and her dog, Daisy. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at https://www.ted.com/tedx
