Video series of trying out the different characters in Street Fighter 6 to find a main. The trial period for each character will usually be 150 ranked matches and 100 match wins (including casuals).
The videos are long since I want to capture the holistic process of learning a new character. This means going through the character guides, combo trials, creating combos of varying difficulty, match up solutions, refining the game plan, and playing in matches.
In this particular video, I rank up from Gold 5 to Plat 1. There is a gap in the series for Ryu from Gold 4 to Gold 5 since I was running some sets with friends and played some casual ranked matches while I wait for them to get ready which ended up being my rank up from Gold 4 to Gold 5. Until I hit Plat 1, I stick with the general gameplan I have already established.
The general gameplan is to win neutral through a strong fireball game and checking enemies with the appropriate moves when they get in range. When knocked down, I drive rush and apply strike throw mix. Based on the match up, I lean more towards offense or neutral more. The plan has room for improvement such as using more drive for more damage and using DP as an anti air.
At this point in the search and series, I have gone through the trial period with Ryu, Luke, Manon, and Guile. I am going through Ryu again since I have grown as a player in regards to match up knowledge and familiarity with overall playstyles and mechanics. Since I was able to reach Plat 1 with the other characters, I wanted to reach Plat 2 since Ryu stands as the baseline character for my search, measuring my competency as a fighting game player as a whole.
With my initial trial with Ryu, I learned the basic match up knowledge when fighting against different characters and learning how to utilize the universal mechanics such as the Drive System.
With Luke, I was able to practice my offensive pressure more due to his plus frames, forward moving attacks, and strong meterless combo potential. Because of this, I was able to learn when it is good and when it is bad to start or force an offensive.
With Manon, I was able to focus more on people's habit since it really is about capitalizing on openings and getting those medals up as my win condition, with each medal reducing the number of mistakes a player can mistake and making Manon a stronger fighter.
With Guile, I was able to focus a lot more on defensive play. I was able to learn what I can do defensively to a lot of different pressure and how to approach neutral with his strong moves. I needed to rely less on offensive pressure to close out rounds since that was the limit of my knowledge.
For context, I started playing fighting games with Guilty Gear: Strive about a month after it released. My learning process was mostly with Gio. When I hit about 100 wins and Lvl 100 with Gio at Floor 9, I switched over to Sol which I ended up like more since he has a really strong kit such as invincible DP, good damage, and good gap closers, while still retaining the strong strike/throw game Gio had. When I was able to challenge a celestial with Sol, I decided to revisit Gio until I was also able to challenge a celestial. I decided that challenging a celestial will be my benchmark of understanding a character enough that I can try out someone new again. From there, I picked up May, I-no, and Ky. By the time I decided to switch games, I have put in about 400 hours in the game.
I then switched over to Tekken 7 to try my hand in a 3D fighting game. I tried out Bob since I thought he was an interesting character while still retaining the wavedash mixup that a Mishima can do. I wanted to try out a Mishima since that was what I thought was iconic to the Tekken franchise, besides the extra dimension. I played Tekken 7 until I hit Brawler with Bob.
I then tried out Street Fighter 5 when Street Fighter 6 was announced. I picked Cammy since she was a rushdown character which fit how I enjoyed to play at the time. I was able to get to Silver with Cammy. Part of me wanted to pick up Ryu since he was the embodiment of how Street Fighter and how to play it, but I did not have the time for it before Street Fighter 6 came out.
