表題はついているものの描写音楽ではなく、
あくまでも古典的な形式と書法に従っており、「絵画より感情」を表現した「性格的交響曲」です。

同時に作曲された第5番と全く対照的な外観を持っていますが共通点も多く、
第１楽章で主題同期がモットーのように反復される点と、”嵐”がスケルツォと終曲のやや大きな間奏となっている点です。
”嵐”は和声的には作品全体の展開部的な役割を持ち、表現意図は明確ですが作品構造上は両義的な性格を持っています。

ベートーヴェンの交響曲の中ではエロイカに続きタイトルが記された2番目の作品で、
自作にタイトルを付した例は、他にピアノソナタ「告別」などがありますが比較的珍しいです。
この第6番はベルリオーズやリストの標題音楽の先駆をなすものと見られています。

第5交響曲がほぼ完成した後の1808年初春から1808年初秋にかけて作曲され、
1808年12月22日、ウィーンにてベートーヴェン自身の指揮によって初演がなされました♪

but they also have many things in common,such as the motto-like repetition of thematic synchronization in the first movement,
and the "Storm" serving as a somewhat large interlude between the Scherzo and the finale.

Harmonically, "Storm" plays the role of a development section for the entire work,
and while its expressive intent is clear, it has an ambiguous character in terms of the work's structure.

This is the second of Beethoven's symphonies to have a title, after the Eroica.
Other examples of Beethoven giving titles to his own compositions include the piano sonata "Farewell," but this is relatively rare.
The 6th Symphony is considered to be the forerunner of the program music of Berlioz and Liszt.

It was composed between early spring and early autumn of 1808, after the Fifth Symphony was almost completed,
and premiered in Vienna on December 22, 1808, conducted by Beethoven himself.
