This one is for all the classical music fans out there. I thought I would record my Columbia Gafonola Savoy playing the Bruch violin concerto OP.26 although I wonder if there's anyone out there who will have the time to watch it all. This is all three movements on six sides of 12" 78rpm record and is a 1948 recording of Ida Haendel (violin) with The Philharmonia Orchestra conducted by Rafael Kubelik.
The Grafonola is c.1915 and has a 12" turntable and a large, triple spring motor. It is a table grand model in an oak case with adjustable louvres to control the volume. I appreciate that an older machine like this with a mica diaphragm is not the ideal player for this sort of performance and it struggles a little with some of the louder, full orchestra passages. All the same, I'm impressed by how well it handles the recording in general and particularly the solo violin.
