To show empathy, we must listen without judging and take the perspective of the other person. To show empathy, we must recognize the other person's emotion and communicate our understanding of this emotion. These empathic actions build connection with the person experiencing pain. People who are facing a challenge or dealing with pain or trauma are not always looking for someone to solve their problem; they often simply need someone who can help them feel a connection, someone to reassure them they are not alone. Empathy fosters connection.
While empathy builds connection, sympathy creates disconnection. Sympathy simply acknowledges another person's hardship; sympathy may even draw unwanted attention to a person's hardship. Empathy, on the other hand, is sharing a personal understanding of what the other person is going through and offering personal comfort in the form of listening or providing individual assistance that will help the person in pain; for example, your friend may need help caring for her children while she deals with her father's death, or a mother struggling to deal with a child in addiction may need to just share with another mother who has been through the same struggle.
In this video we discuss how sympathy can cause discord and disconnection and when sympathy can be a form of kindness. We also discuss the power of empathy.
