I started my dance journey in ballet at age 6 in Juneau, AK. After we moved to Maine, my parents found the Maine Dance Center in Ellsworth where I had the incredible luck to learn from Lucy Rowe, Keith Hutchison, and S Ariane Garfield in an environment that fostered safe movement, body positivity, and excellent technique. As a teenager I decided to pursue dance training in a boarding arts school environment near Boston, but I unfortunately developed an injury that stopped me from pursing ballet. After college at Sarah Lawrence outside of NYC, I moved to Portland, Maine. One night after a yoga class I was at a stoplight when I saw through a window (that was usually covered) a group of women wearing long skirts and sparkly belts, having the time of their lives. I wanted in. A while later I finally found my first belly dance class. While I had taken jazz and contemporary classes before, I had never tried belly dance. It was such a different way of moving, of relating to one's body, and I was instantly hooked. It took me a year to learn to shimmy... move my hips up and down? What?! After many years away, I have recently returned to ballet, teaching basics to adults, sharing the incredibly positive aspects and helpful of this dance with grown-ups of all backgrounds and body types at my studio in Portland, ME, and in workshops for belly dancers all over the country through my Grace Academy foundations. This piece, performed at Art of the Belly in Ocean City, MD on March 19, 2016, represents my journey of discovery from ballet to belly dance.
