Burke and Hare Killed 16 People. Edinburgh Kept One of Their Skeletons as a Trophy.

Описание: In 1827, Edinburgh was the most scientifically ambitious city in the world. Its medical school was world-renowned. Its surgeons were rewriting medicine. And it had a problem it refused to name out loud.

It needed bodies.

Not metaphorically. Literally. Hundreds of human cadavers every year — to teach, to dissect, to maintain the reputation that made Edinburgh the centre of the modern medical world. The law provided almost none of them. So the city looked away while an underground market filled the gap.

Burke and Hare didn’t corrupt that market. They followed it to its logical conclusion. They killed 16 people and sold every one of them to the most celebrated surgeon in Scotland. He received the bodies. He asked no questions. He was never charged.

When Burke was finally caught, Edinburgh hanged him in front of 25,000 people. Then handed his body to the medical school. His skin was removed and tanned into a souvenir. His skeleton was mounted in a glass case.

It’s still there today.
