The Bharatiya Janata Party surged ahead in Tripura in what is going to be an historic election for the state. The party is leading in over 40 seats. 59 seats out of 60 are up for grabs in Tripura, and for the first time in 25 years, the Communist Party of India (Marxist) is being dethroned.
One seat was postponed after a CPM candidate died.
The shift in tide is significant. In 2013, the BJP only managed to get a vote share of 1.54 percent. This election, BJP has a 42 percent vote share. Congress, the BJP's competition at the national level, has lost a lot of power in Tripura, going from a from 45 percent vote share in 2013 to 1.9 percent.
The BJP is now set to decide who will be the next Chief Minister of Tripura.
