An easy to construct wide-range variable capacitor utilising rolled-up layers of aluminium foil tape and a dielectric film.
I've put the files for the frame here: http://www.vk2zay.net/article/270
Errata: I said polystyrene will get hot in a microwave, I meant PVC. PS is very low loss, as is PP, PE and PTFE. I also meant Chlorine atoms not molecules obviously, it was way too late to be making videos. ;)
BTW: I soldered the wires to the aluminium tape by tinning the aluminium under wax. This is a little-known trick to wet aluminium with normal electrical solder, melt a pool of candle wax over the spot you want to tin, then rub the spot with the iron tip while feeding in some solder, it will eventually tin a small spot which you can enlarge by more rubbing with solder.
