Описание: A Historic Experiment from 4th to 15th July 2025

In the peak of July 2025, the skies over Delhi are witnessing a rare scientific experiment that could redefine the way India combats air pollution and water scarcity. The Indian government, in collaboration with the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) and the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kanpur, has initiated an Artificial Rain Experiment, commonly known as Cloud Seeding, scheduled between 4th July to 15th July 2025.

For a city often choked with smog, dust, and water shortages, this operation offers hope not just for immediate relief but for sustainable climate management strategies in the future.

What is Artificial Rain?
Artificial Rain, or Cloud Seeding, is a process that stimulates precipitation by introducing certain chemicals into clouds. The goal is to encourage rain formation, especially during dry spells, to mitigate droughts, replenish reservoirs, or, in Delhi's case, reduce hazardous air pollution.

The technology is not new. Countries like the USA, China, UAE, and Australia have used cloud seeding for decades to enhance rainfall, clear smog, or even influence weather patterns during large events.

However, for India, especially Delhi, this large-scale, systematic experiment marks a significant scientific milestone.

How Does Artificial Rain Work?
The process of cloud seeding revolves around physics and chemistry:

Identifying Suitable Clouds: Not all clouds are ideal for seeding. Only clouds with sufficient moisture, especially cumulus clouds, are targeted.

Seeding Agents: The most common chemicals used are:

Silver Iodide (AgI): Mimics ice crystals, encouraging water droplets to freeze and grow heavier, eventually falling as rain.

Potassium Chloride

Sodium Chloride (common salt)

Dry Ice (frozen CO₂)

Deployment:

Aircraft are used to release these chemicals directly into the clouds at high altitudes.

Ground-based rockets or flares can also inject seeding material.

Rainfall Induction:

The chemicals provide nuclei for supercooled water droplets to condense upon.

As droplets grow, they become too heavy to stay suspended and fall as rain.

The success depends heavily on atmospheric conditions, existing humidity, and cloud type.

Why Artificial Rain in Delhi?
Delhi faces multiple challenges:

✅ Severe Air Pollution: Particularly in winter, smog blankets the city, with PM2.5 and PM10 levels skyrocketing beyond safe limits.

✅ Water Shortages: With declining groundwater levels and erratic monsoon patterns, Delhi struggles to meet water demands.

✅ Urban Heat Island Effect: The concrete-heavy landscape traps heat, making the city warmer than surrounding areas.

In this context, artificial rain serves dual purposes:

Washing Down Pollutants: Rain can bring down dust, soot, and particulate matter, offering temporary respite from air pollution.

Boosting Water Resources: Controlled rainfall can replenish water bodies and support agriculture around the NCR (National Capital Region).

The 2025 Delhi Cloud Seeding Project
The current experiment is the result of months of planning by:

IMD: Providing meteorological forecasts to identify seeding windows.

IIT Kanpur: Leading research and technical execution.

Delhi Government & Ministry of Environment: Overseeing implementation.

Timeline:
4th to 15th July 2025: Ten-day experimental window, coinciding with the monsoon onset.

Daily Monitoring: Aircraft and ground teams assess cloud structures using radar and satellite data.

Logistics:
Two specialized aircraft equipped with cloud-seeding flares.

Ground-based meteorological stations for real-time monitoring.

Air Quality Index (AQI) sensors deployed to measure pollution reduction post-rainfall.

The experiment focuses on:

✅ Testing the effectiveness of different seeding agents.

✅ Studying the impact on localized rainfall patterns.

✅ Evaluating improvements in air quality and visibility.

Global Examples & Previous Indian Attempts
Countries like:

China: Used cloud seeding to ensure clear skies during the 2008 Beijing Olympics.

UAE: Regularly deploys cloud seeding to enhance rainfall.

USA: Uses cloud seeding for snow enhancement in drought-prone states.

India has dabbled in cloud seeding:

Maharashtra & Karnataka: Small-scale operations during droughts.

Haryana & Punjab: Attempts to clear smog post-harvest stubble burning.

However, the scale and scientific rigor of the 2025 Delhi experiment are unprecedented.

Challenges & Criticism
Despite its promise, artificial rain is not without concerns:

Weather Dependency: Requires existing cloud formations; cannot create clouds from scratch.

Effectiveness Debate: Scientific community remains divided over consistent, measurable results.

Environmentalists, cautiously optimistic, emphasize:
"Monitor chemical use, involve communities, and ensure ecological safeguards."
