BMW R75/5 Oil Filter Change (Engine Out)

Описание: This is another video detailing my restoration of a 1971 BMW R75/5. I was installing a new oil filter and noticed a small issue that seems to be fairly common on these old airheads.

Before the early 1980's, a new oil filter came with two o-rings that went on both sides of the oil filter itself. These two o-rings sealed off both ends of the filter and allowed the oil to pressurize and force oil through the paper filter element. Sometime in the early 1980's, filter manufacturers improved the filter design and the o-rings were changed to a cylindrical shape. The cylindrical o-rings were pressed into the filter itself, making it a one-piece design.

This R75/5 engine had a newer oil filter installed, but still had an old o-ring seated at the bottom of the oil tube. This made the filter too long and I noticed the pressure had split the top cylindrical o-ring. I guess this old o-ring had been in there for many years; probably decreasing the effectiveness of the oil filter once the top o-ring split.

I fished the old o-ring out with a wire coat hanger, checked the oil pressure release ball valve with a bamboo chopstick, and installed the new filter.

Note the orientation of the engine in the video. My R75/5 engine is currently out of the frame and is sitting on the back of the block, with the front facing straight up.
