ESP and the paranormal were the order of the day for this 1972 series starring Gary Collins. The pilot tv movie ('Sweet, Sweet Rachel') starred Alex Dreier, an interesting character who traded in a long career as a respected news commentator for a new vocation: acting. But his imposing voice and physical presence weren't what was wanted for the series so Collins got the gig. The show enlisted Harlan Ellison and DC Fontana as story editors and took their subject seriously.
The first theme was composed by David Shire (for a while husband of Talia Shire) who has written for television, movies, Broadway, the concert hall...you name it. 'Bells' made for an ethereal opening, but it wasn't what somebody wanted, and after just a handful of episodes came the second theme, composed by Billy Goldenberg: assertive, with synth taking the lead over strings. By then the names of Ellison and Fontana were gone from the closing credits.
Universal really upped their game for the second season (both seasons were about half the normal length). Startling new graphics, and a new Goldenberg theme that's one of the most chilling written for a tv series. The show seemed to get a little better too.
