On July 11th, 1897, three men rose into the Arctic sky inside a hydrogen balloon, convinced that technology had finally found a shortcut through one of the most hostile environments on Earth.
That balloon was called Örnen — The Eagle.
This video tells the full story of The Andrée Expedition, a bold Swedish attempt to cross the Arctic by air. Led by engineer Salomon August Andrée, and accompanied by photographer Nils Strindberg and engineer Knut Frænkel, the expedition promised to eliminate the hardships of traditional polar travel by floating over the ice instead of marching across it.
Within days, that promise collapsed.
After losing control of the balloon and being forced down onto drifting pack ice, the expedition transformed into a long and methodical struggle for survival. What followed was not a sudden disaster, but months of exhausting travel across unstable sea ice, followed by a final camp on White Island (Kvitøya), deep in the Arctic.
For more than three decades, the fate of the expedition remained unknown.
In 1930, a Norwegian expedition discovered the remains of the camp, along with journals, equipment, and photographic plates that revealed the final chapter of the journey.
This documentary-style episode covers:
• The idea behind using a balloon for Arctic exploration
• The design of Örnen and the technical risks involved
• The failed flight and forced landing on pack ice
• Daily life hauling sledges across drifting ice
• Equipment failures, ice drift, and diminishing supplies
• The final camp on White Island
• The discovery of the expedition decades later
• The historical reassessment of the expedition’s decisions and legacy
The exact cause of death of the three men has never been definitively established. Historians generally agree that multiple factors likely contributed, including illness, environmental exposure, exhaustion, and the limitations of shelter and supplies.
This is a historical documentary focused on exploration, decision-making, and the limits of technology when confronted by extreme environments. No graphic imagery is shown.
