Profile:
Uptown Records started in the late-’80s with Andre Harrell, who was working under Russell Simmons. Andre was an artist himself, as one-half of the old school group Dr. Jeckyll and Mr. Hyde, but he was mostly on the business side by that point as general manager for Russell’s Rush Management. But some of his ideas didn’t mix with Russell’s. For example, he had a rapper that he thought could also appeal to the R&B crowd, and Russell wasn’t diggin’ that idea for shit. After Andre was offered his own label by MCA Records, he took that rapper with him as one of his first acts. In 1987, Heavy D was a hit, and Uptown was “kickin’ it”.
Uptown was up and down in the early years. It hit with Heavy and did so again with Guy, but there were also artists like Finesse & Synquis and The Gyrlz, who didn’t do as much. There was also Al B. Sure!, an Uptown artist distributed by Warner Bros. who briefly became a huge star with his In Effect Mode album in ’88. With producers like Teddy Riley, Kyle West, and Eddie F. on the team, Uptown was changing the sound of R&B. During that same time, Andre hired an intern named Sean “Puffy” Combs, as Uptown moved into the ’90s.
