HIKING THE COLORADO TRAIL — Day 1

On this video series, I will be hiking a six day section hike of the Colorado Trail from Silverton to Durango. Being one of the most scenic sections of the Colorado Trail (CT), our group was excited to hike this beautiful southern 85-ish mile section southbound, ending in Durango (from where we started).

As mentioned in the title, we ride a train from Durango, Colorado to Elk Park. The Durango and Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad, often abbreviated as the D&SNG, is a 3 ft narrow-gauge heritage railroad that operates on 45.2 miles of track between Durango and Silverton. The railway is a federally-designated National Historic Landmark and was originally opened in 1882 by the Denver and Rio Grande Railroad (D&RG) to transport silver and gold ore mined from the San Juan Mountains.

The trail we hike, the CT, is a long-distance trail running for 486 miles from the mouth of Waterton Canyon southwest of Denver to Durango. Its highest point is 13,271 feet above sea level, and most of the trail is above 10,000 feet.
