In honor of the 40th Anniversary of the Jacksons Victory album, I think back to the summer of 1984 and the Jackson mania that was taking over the world. The highly anticipated album, and of course the upcoming Victory tour was the event of not only the summer, but the whole year!
I remember getting up early on July 2nd to get to the record store, fearing that they would sell out and I wouldn’t get a copy. Luckily I got one! I took it home, and couldn’t wait to crank the first song “Torture”. I remember dropping the needle and the first thing I heard was that soaring guitar line. It sounded massive. Not what I was expecting from a Jacksons song. What really blew me away was what I was hearing in the verse. I could pick out two guitar parts playing against eachother perfectly. One distorted and the other clean. It was probably the first time I really really paid attention to a mix and how the guitars were panned slightly to give each part some room. Now I realize that this is a duet between Jermaine & Michael. Man they came out swinging right off the bat! I knew there was going to be a guitar solo and I couldn’t wait to hear what it was going to sound like. The only guitar player that is credited on this song was Jack Wargo , and it just says “guitar solo”. Not sure if he played all the parts as well. Maybe David Williams or possibly Tito layed down some tracks too. Jacks solo oozes with attitude, feel and all the grease you would expect. His use of bending and space is what really got me. It was like a conversation in itself. Just like the duet between Jermaine and Michael. And it didn’t stop there. The outro has some of the greatest ad libs I ever heard. Playing against the vocals with just the right phrases and perfect tone!! I tried to recreate some of them in the video.
I listened to that song over and over that day and my 11 year old ears was able to pick out the intro line. I felt it was time now to learn the rest of the song!
