The Schäfflertanz is one of Munich’s oldest traditions; a guild dance performed only every seven years by the Schäffler, or barrel makers.
According to legend, the dance began in 1517 after a devastating outbreak of plague. When fear kept people indoors long after the danger had passed, the Schäffler danced through the streets with music, hoops and barrels to draw people back outside and restore trust in public life.
While the story is legendary, the Schäfflertanz has been documented in Munich since the early 18th century and has followed a strict seven-year cycle for over 250 years.
