The Ethiopian Commodity Exchange (ECX) was founded in 2008 in Addis Ababa. The ECX aims to provide a low-cost, secure marketplace to benefit all participants, i.e. sellers, buyers, intermediaries, and the general public. Trading is done on the basis of warehouse receipts issued by ECX operated warehouses. In the warehouses throughout the country, the commodities are graded, weighed, and certified. So ECX guarantees the integrity of the products.
The main driving force behind the development of the ECX and former CEO was Eleni Gabre-Madhin, an Ethiopian-born economist and commodity trading expert. She knows the economic theories as well as the reality of a developing country and established a well functioning organization.
