What is Modak?
Modak is a sweet dumpling that is famous in southern part of India owing to its link with Ganesh Chaturthi festival. There are many variations of modak like fried modak, khoya/mawa modak, suji modak etc but this is traditional ukadiche modak recipe which is prepared using steamed rice flour dumpling with sweet coconut jaggery filling. Ukadiche means steamed so the name justifies the recipe.
How to shape Modak?
Preparing modak is easy but requires patience. It can get tricky if you don’t have mould to shape it perfectly. In this recipe we will show how to make modak shape without mould so watch it carefully if you want perfect modak shape. It may require some practice though, so don’t be disappointed if you can’t the shape in first attempt itself. Or, you could buy a mould in Indian stores or online easily. That will reduce your effort greatly. But practice it for sometime, with patience, and you can master it easily.
How to prepare Modak?
In this traditional Ganpati special recipes we first prepare coconut stuffing for modak. For this we will fry grated coconut, jaggery in ghee and mix cardamom powder, cashews and raisins. Once jaggery syrup is dry we will take it out and let it cool. Note that while the mixture should become dry, do not overcook it.
Then separately we will prepare rice flour dough. The smoother the rice flour the better for this. We will bring add salt and ghee to water and bring it to boil. The add rice flour, mix well. Then we steam this rice flour dough for some time. Then knead it really well until it become very smooth dough.
Finally, we need to prepare modak. For this, we take small ball from dough, spread it into circle shape, make some modak fold shapes by bringing the edges together with fingers. Add coconut mix filling to this and close the modak fold in nice modak shape. We will steam this for few minutes to get delicious sweet modak that are ready to serve.
