In the 1950s, Weddings cost the equivalent of $3000 in 2025. Now, they cost about $30,000 on average in the US and 32,000 GBP in the UK.
Social media, movies and just a culture of excessive consumption have resulted in weddings being a status symbol of wealth and often power. Which is a throwback to what weddings have traditionally been - business or political alliances.
