Concepts are the building blocks of theories; they are the causes and effects. The causal processes are summarized as propositions. When you start reading a research article, it is critically important to start by identifying what the central concepts are. Often, you can find definitions in the article itself. Sometimes you will need to look for a definition in a cited source or you can use Google to find definitions. Once you understand how the key concepts are defined, you are ready to read and understand an article.
