The Barreleye Fish (Macropinna microstoma) is one of the strangest and most fascinating deep-sea creatures ever discovered. Found at depths of 600–800 meters, this fish is best known for its transparent, dome-shaped head — a unique feature that allows scientists to literally see its internal organs.
Inside the clear, fluid-filled dome are two large, green, barrel-shaped eyes that point straight upward. These eyes are extremely sensitive and designed to detect the faintest light from above, helping the fish spot prey like small jellyfish and drifting organisms in complete darkness. When needed, the eyes can rotate forward, allowing the Barreleye to look straight ahead while feeding.
