BIOGRAPHIES
Marlena Devoe, soprano
Winner of a Leonard Ingrams Award and the Joan Sutherland and Richard Bonynge Bel Canto Award, New Zealand born Samoan soprano Marlena Devoe also won the Richard Bonynge Award and the Tait Memorial Prize. She was a 2018 Alvarez Artist at Garsington Opera at Wormsley, where she made her debut as Alice Ford Falstaff.
Marlena Devoe completed her MA in Advanced Vocal Studies with Distinction at the Wales International Academy of Voice, studying with Nuccia Focile and Dennis O’Neill. Prior to her studies in Cardiff, she studied at the University of Auckland, with a degree in Italian and German. Following a language exchange programme in Florence, she studied at the Manhattan School of Music in New York.
In Masterclasses, she has worked with Rebecca Evans, Dame Della Jones, Dame Kiri te Kanawa, Nelly Miricioiu, Ann Murray DBE, Virginia Zeani, Richard Bonynge and David Gowland. Concert engagements have included performances alongside Dame Kiri te Kanawa, Andrea Bocelli, Jonathan Lemalu and Simon O’Neill.
She attended the Georg Solti Accademia di Bel Canto, which led to an invitation to sing Adina L’elisir d’amore at the Verbier Festival conducted by Jésus Lopez-Cobos, and her engagements have further included Mimì La bohème for Lyric Opera, Dublin, Lauretta Gianni Schicchi for Singapore Lyric Opera, Gilda Rigoletto for Opera Project and Violetta La traviata for Clonter Opera.
Recent engagements have included Mimì La bohème for New Zealand Opera and Oxford Opera, which she also repeated for additional performances with Lyric Opera, Dublin, an Opera Gala with Clonter Opera, Beethoven Symphony No. 9 with the Orion Orchestra at Cadogan Hall, Messiah with the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra, Verdi Requiem at the Snape Maltings and Classical Favourites with the Roman River Festival Orchestra.
COVID-19 cost her engagements including her return to Garsington Opera at Wormsley and her debut at the Edinburgh Festival as First Nymph Rusalka as well as creating Purea in Tim Finn’s Star Navigator for West Australian Opera.
Engagements currently confirmed for 2021 include Euridice Orfeo ed Euridice for New Zealand Opera and Pamina The Magic Flute for Oxford Opera.
Kelly Lovelady, conductor
Kelly Lovelady is an Australian conductor based in London and in increasing demand abroad. She has enjoyed repeat invitations to conduct for Opera Holland Park, City of London Festival, Cluster New Music & Integrated Arts Festival, Cortona Sessions for New Music, Pop Montreal International Music Festival, Greenpeace and the Tait Memorial Trust.
Kelly has served as Assistant Conductor to the London Philharmonic Orchestra under Vladimir Jurowski, Konzert und Theater Sankt Gallen under Otto Tausk (Written on Skin), Opera Holland Park under Brad Cohen (Ariadne auf Naxos), Richard Bonynge for Naxos Records; and rehearsal conductor to Simon Rattle’s Young Orchestra for London. Recent engagements have included co-conductor with Ilan Volkov and BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra; rehearsal conductor for London Sinfonietta; and Musical Director for the inaugural production of Gothic Opera, Der Vampyr, nominated for Best Opera Production in London’s 2019 Off West End Awards.
Kelly is the founding Artistic Director of Ruthless Jabiru: a London chamber orchestra dedicated to exploring humanitarian and social justice stories through New music to promote compassion, sustainability and social consciousness. In 2019 Ruthless Jabiru made its Grimeborn festival debut with Silk Moth: a fully-staged programme of music by Bushra El-Turk, Liza Lim and Cassandra Miller exploring female dis/empowerment in so-called honour crimes.
