Sweet peas might be one of the most romantic flowers you can grow — climbing vines, incredible scent, and armfuls of blooms that feel straight out of an English cottage garden.
But in my Pittsburgh garden (Zone 6b), spring doesn’t always cooperate.
Our cool weather window can be short… and once summer heat hits, sweet peas are done.
So this year, I’m experimenting.
In this video, I’m testing different sweet pea growing methods to see which ones help me:
• start earlier
• grow stronger plants
• extend my bloom window
• and maybe — just maybe — find my sweet pea sweet spot
We’ll talk about:
🌱 the difference between Spencer and heirloom types
🌱 why sweet peas prefer cold starts
🌱 how timing changes everything depending on your zone
🌱 and the specific challenges of gardening in an “in-between” climate like mine
If you’re growing sweet peas in Zones 5–7 (or anywhere with unpredictable springs), I hope this gives you ideas — and encouragement — to experiment in your own garden.
Because sometimes it’s less about “outsmarting” the season… and more about learning how to work with it.
🌸
I’ll be sharing updates as these grow, along with lots more seed starting, planning, and flower experiments all season long — so subscribe if you’d like to grow along with me.
Thanks for being here. 💛
