As we arrive at the turning of the year, this guided New Year Threshold Meditation invites you to pause at the place in between — between what has been lived and what is not yet known.
Rather than setting resolutions or striving toward a “new you,” this meditation offers something quieter and more profound: a chance to look back with kindness, appreciation, and honesty, and to stand at the threshold of the new year with presence and beginner’s mind.
Inspired by the spirit of Auld Lang Syne — “for the sake of old times” — and the ancient symbolism of January’s namesake, Janus, the god who looks both backward and forward, this practice honors the fullness of the past year: the joy and the sorrow, the gains and the losses, the moments of awakening and endurance.
Together, we:
Gently reflect on the year just lived without replaying its story
Acknowledge what feels complete and ready to be released
Rest in the steady presence that has accompanied us through it all
Stand at the threshold of the new year with openness and curiosity
Ask softly: What quality wants to live through me?
This meditation includes periods of silence, embodied awareness, reflective imagery, and a closing reading of Rumi’s The Guest House, reminding us to meet life — and ourselves — with compassion and awareness.
